This is just the music video for Seven Nation Army
(i’m gonna cross post my humble rant from twitter)
we need to go back to using “squick” and “notp” and re-normalize “don’t like don’t look” i really can’t wrap my mind around anti culture, forming a community and identity entirely around hating and harassing. isn’t it stressful? exhausting? terrifying? if you’re in a community that normalizes accusing others, of gathering “receipts” aren’t you constantly made aware of at any time for any reason that could be your head on the chopping block? if you don’t get along with someone or question leadership, direction, or motive then you could be called out for being an abuser for miscommunication, for a fight.
and the existence of anti culture psychologically impacts even those who don’t identify as antis. the community as a whole is shaped by the agenda of antis, and that makes it so everyone is constantly on guard, constantly self-monitoring, constantly aware of everything they say and do and like and post and share because they never know which OP will be discovered as problematic and which content is overtly or covertly problematic. when you make new friends or meet new people, you’re constantly on guard just in case they’re the type to make a callout, talk behind your back, leak your secrets.
it’s interesting that within fandom spaces i’m seeing chronic illness and psych stress rise at the same rate. i’m not gonna go into a big lecture on the links between physical illness and stress, but you can google it.
i’ve been active in fandom since 2003-2004 and it’s become so much more unhealthy. people are glorifying their mental illnesses because it gets them a slight pass on any abusive or problematic behavior they get called out for. and people will say they’re lying unless they show illness signs online. this isn’t healthy. its leading people to be more sick, experience worse symptoms, identify more with their illness than with their hobbies. people are losing their identity outside of illness due to the stress of 1) having to be a survivor in order to ship problematic content, 2) having to constantly perform as the perfect and idealized version of themselves so they fly under the anti’s radar, 3) never being able to express themselves fully and genuinely while safely and securely connecting to other people.
antis have bred a fandom culture where people are sicker, more stressed, and constantly afraid. the fact that antis are unyielding, willing to call people’s work and school, willing to dox people adds another layer that goes above and beyond “just stop caring! post whatever you want!”
antis have begun using their purity politics to hurt people both psychologically via the internet and physically via doxxing. we’re living in an era where being our 100% genuine self, with all the bad and good and problematic and healing parts, is like telling someone the location and password to the speakeasy. you never know who’s gonna call the cops.
i hate the idea of “fandom mom” because its typically tied to uh. questionable behavior. but i genuinely feel that way about myself. i’ve been online so long and seen it change so much. i’ve had everything happen to me from CSA to callout posts. i know what it feels like to have the whole world crash down around you, to feel totally isolated, to feel like its all over. to lose your friends, your identity, all your hobbies, because you fucked up.
people are allowed to fuck up, do bad things, say bad things. we’re all learning and growing. i never want people to feel isolated and destroyed, especially not over internet purity policing.
i’m 2 years away from having my phd in clinical psychology and what i’m seeing online, what people are doing, how people are hurting it makes me sick honestly. i always say “this is the last friend under 22 i make!” then 22 becomes 21 becomes 20 becomes 19 because i’m not going to see a child abused, bullied, harassed, isolated. i’m not going to see teens and young adults hurt themselves because you don’t like their ship.
but that’s what antis want, isn’t it? if you’re problematic you better change or kill yourself. teens and young adults killing themselves over ships is totally the way to make healthy change!
this has gone on way longer than i thought and i feel like i’ve jumped the track but. the point is? antis are hurting themselves and others because they don’t like the game you’re playing. meanwhile, antis by and large aren’t doing any actual work to protect actual people
